Code of Behaviour
Our school exists to nurture the growth of the fine young people of our community in a rapidly changing world. It is our mission to work cooperatively with parents/Guardians in developing:
- students who are striving to reach their individual potential and who are prepared for future challenges;
- students whose self-worth and self-esteem allow them to recognize their strengths and weaknesses;
- students who attain the greatest possible degree of self-discipline and who become contributing, respectful and responsible citizens.
We are committed to providing:
- a climate in which each person is respected and respectful towards self, others and their environment;
- a learning environment which is conductive to teaching and learning;
- an atmosphere of co-operation, stability and support;
- an appreciation of healthy lifestyles;
- a climate on which personal and collective successes are celebrated.
All members of the school community have the right to:
- be treated with respect and dignity
- an environment where conflict and differences are addressed respectfully and with civility.
Students are expected to:
- demonstrate honesty and integrity;
- respect the rights, ideas and opinions of all members of the school community;
- treat on another with dignity and respect at all times;
- communicate, demonstrating respect, with all members of the school community in choice of words, gestures and body language.
Responsible citizenship involves:
- appropriate participation in the civil life of the school community;
- active and engaged citizens who are aware of their rights and who accept responsibility for protecting their rights and the rights of others;
- taking care of school buildings, furniture and supplies;
- understanding that the costs associated with vandalism and theft are an additional financial burden to students, their parents/guardians and other taxpayers.
Students are expected to:
- seek assistance from a member of the school staff, if necessary, to resolve conflict peacefully;
- take appropriate measures to help those in need;
- demonstrate a positive attitude toward the civil life of the school community;
- respect and comply with all applicable federal, provincial, and municipal laws;
- show proper care and regard for school property and the property of others.
All members of the school community have the right to be safe and to feel safe in their school community. All members of the school community must not:
- engage in bullying behaviours;
- commit sexual assault;
- traffic weapons or illegal drugs;
- commit robbery;
- be in the possession of any weapon, including firearms;
- use any object to threaten or intimidate another person;
- cause injury to any person with an object;
- be in possession of, or be under the influence of, or provide others with alcohol or illegal drugs;
- inflict or encourage others to inflict bodily harm on another person;
- engage in hate propaganda or other forms of behaviour motivated by hate or bias;
- commit an act of vandalism that causes damage to school property or to property located on the premises of the school.
To establish a productive, safe, and respectful learning community, we must accept the expectations outlined in this code of behaviour. Sometimes, strategies may need to be used to ensure safety and a culture of respect. The strategies used may vary from student to student and can be based on the frequency, intensity and extremity of the offense. Some of these strategies include but are not limited to:
- an interview with teacher and/or administration;
- time for reflective thinking;
- making restitution where appropriate;
- withdrawal of a school privilege;
- meeting with parent/guardian, principal and classroom teacher;
- implementation of behaviour management strategies;
- involvement of School Board support services;
- withdrawal from the classroom setting;
- involvement of/or referral to outside agencies;
- school suspension;
- school expulsion.
